Yup, this is perfectly normal and most libtool-consumers do it like 
this.

I'm not too concerned about backwards compat, this is pretty standard 
stuff for libtool. I'd say the main risk is whether the fiddly handling 
of $svn_lib_vers (0 vs 2) goes wrong somehow. I'll merge to trunk 
anyway, can let it stew there for a while; hope that's OK.
