Nothing; backgrounding dwm was left from trying a few other ways to do it. Thank you.
Then it can be simplified further:

xsetroot -name ...
sleep 1
done &
dwm
kill $!
I wonder whether the README should be updated accordingly. But it is there
for years and nobody seemed to notice before. I attach the trivial patch,
just in case.
