Because he wants it to still complete to the things in $PATH (or STDIN, in this case) but doesn't want to see it. I still agree that it's stupid. In regards to OP: So write a patch that creates a flag that hides all stdin until the input string is non-empty. Should be trivial. However, don't expect it to go mainline. This is a tiny corner use-case and I suspect that many dmenu users would find it stupid.
