It depends of the configuration of your system and the applications you are using. In ther terminfo entry we don't have the km entry, but we have rmm and smm. From my view point an application should look first in km, and if km indicates the system has a meta key, then use smm or rmm, but there are some applications which seems use them (smm and rmm) without looking km. I had this problem in debian with mutt, but I don't have this problem in other operating systems. The solution is running 'tput rmm' before of mc, or you can remove smm and rmm in the terminfo definition.
