I have found a similar patch [1] submitted to the list about a month before this one was. It does not fix the initial issue my patch set out to solve (i.e. blanking the screen to the correct colour) but its functionality is provided by my patch. Note that [1] does not show the failure colour when input is entered and subsequently cleared, so it cannot be used for tamper detection but only login failures.
