It would be an interesting project, but you may be able to get a lot of
mileage out of changing the max FPS of st down to 60/30:
/* frames per second st should at maximum draw to the screen */
static unsigned int xfps = 60;
static unsigned int actionfps = 30;
I've found this helps keep CPU usage down to a minimum.
