Yes I brought it up, but I don't think it's an insurmountable issue, just that it won't work as well. I believe the major issue is with version ranges, which likely is a problem mainly for third-party add-ons (e.g. your lib requires 5.3 or above). Nearest version resolution however takes care of user usually getting the desired library versions as dependencies (if he sets them as explicit dependencies). See http://mojo.codehaus.org/versions-maven-plugin/version-rules.html for more info (it's for a plugin but well documents Maven's core version resolution - not that Maven 2.x and 3.x differ in that respect).
