First off, sorry for taking so long to look at this patch. 

Second, it looks like the patch doesn't apply cleanly to TRUNK anymore. There 
were a few rejections. Not sure why.

Third, I'd really like to understand the architecture before I dive really deep 
into the code. Can you comment with a short writeup of the approach?
