Verified that the THRIFT-1766 patch fixes my problem when applied on top of
0.9.0 -- at least for the pure-Ruby protocol impl. I'm not able to test the C
extension library on my laptop; let me know if this test would be valuable and
I'll perform it on a Linux box.
