TL;DR:
+1 for both variants.
Long version:
The bad news is that I still experience problems with MinGW on Windows, due
to a bug that makes it impossible to build a working bison > 2.4 from the
sources. Unfortunately I have to do that, the MinGW repo offers version
2.4.2.1 only. As the bison build finally succeded and Thrift configure went
through, I really assumed no further problems ahead. Turned out, I was dead
wrong. I finally got stuck at an unfixed issue, known to the MinGW team
since mid of 2013, which lets bison crash right at the start due to a wrong
DLL import from msvcrt.dll. I really hope I can get this fixed soon. So from
a today's viewpoint, both variants are fine with me, as I have to modify the
build scripts manually in either case.
