RHEL and CentOS 6 use gcc 4.4.
RHEL 7 came out in June 2014 with gcc 4.8.2.
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise) uses gcc 4.6.3.
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty) came out in April 2014 with gcc 4.8.2.
Ideally, we wouldn't abandon the people that were on the "newest" version of a
long term support Linux as of last year.
