Backward compatibility may not be required at least given my thoughts.  If the 
endpoint stuff ends up just as a wrapper transport that wraps all encapsulated 
data, then the only requirement is that the clients and servers both utilize 
the endpoint transport as a tunnel of sorts.  The endpoint transport would then 
have its own protocol that actually wraps around the protocols used by the 
server and client.  Furthermore, the endpoint transport would layer on top of 
whatever transport the user desired to use: whether anonymous pipes, TCP 
streams, etc.
