Thanks James for the followup.  All is working for me now, compiling and 
linking is all fine.

Yes I used the askubuntu answer I mentioned earlier which is similar to the one 
you linked in.   For me pkgconf was not installed, after installation all is 
good.

 

Remaining issue is does configure script need to be improved to be more 
explicit about what the problem might be or is it fine the way it is?

If script is fine, then case can be closed.
