I think I have a solution that shouldn't break anything: create a wrapper for 
*std::string* called "{*}::apache::thrift::binary_string{*}" that basically 
passes everything through to std::string.  In template resolution, however, it 
will be distinguishable from std::string.   The thrift compiler for C++ will 
then use {*}"::apache::thrift::binary_string{*}" instead of "{*}std::string{*}" 
when generating binary fields,

I love it when a plan comes together ;).  No thrift option name will be needed 
and it should do everything that I and others want.

Attached is my working definition: _[[updated: see below]]_ – I would very much 
appreciate receiving feedback!  (I know that many of the source lines are a bit 
long for some people's taste; that can be resolved later.)  The constexpr 
comments indicate where constexpr _might_ be added for use with C++20.
