Ahh yes, we currently have a real lack of type casting capability which would 
become even more critical when/if we introduce some sort of native schema 
capability into TinkerPop. I think [~xiazcy]'s [recent proposal for an 
asNumber() 
step|https://lists.apache.org/thread/bl7n4zxqopdkstrckrz0ylmx7jpk861k] is a 
good way forward here.

I will close this JIRA for now as Won't Do. Feel free to reopen at any time if 
you'd like to revisit it.
