just pushed the change for this:

unit/integration tests pass, so i think this is looking good. i'm going to
keep this issue open though as a reminder to write some more tests which i'll
probably tackle tomorrow.
[~dmill] if you could test this change out and let me know if it sorts out the
problem for you, that would be awesome.
