Lots of other projects have ${project}-site repos in git; should we move our site to git too? I don't see any historical discussions about it on the dev-list. As a nice side effect, moving to git should make it easier to get website update contributions from new contributors, like the folks Dimitris and I talked to at FOSDEM earlier this year. I think this will require infrastructure work, which I'm happy to take that on if there are no objections and someone can point me in the right direction. The folders for the site and the release repos are both copied from there, so I don't think it is so easy (or useful) to move them.
We can alter the tooling to pull from git. I've forgotten what uses svn directly or not; the tools/update-version.sh script does use svn but it should be easy to change to git instead.
