For the '--with-libev' option, I concur.
The benchmark numbers look appealing compared to libevent:

Is it compatible with ALv2 (I'm not a lawyer but my review of libev's
LICENSE file looks like it is)?
Does it have to be? It's a library that we wouldn't include the source
for (I assume), just depend on. I mean, there's plenty of Linux stuff
under GPL we depend on (like, libc). :).
What is libev's maturity level (actively maintained; adding features;
maintenance mode; no changes for over 1 year)?
Certainly not as mature as libevent. But, I like libev's "model" better
I think.
Is this change involved enough to warrant its own branch?
No idea, but that's an idea. Paul?
Is libevent effectively its only competitor? I noticed liboop but
it's LGPL; and glib Main Event Loop but that's GPL or LGPL. Is that it?
Not sure, but is the license really an issue here? Not sure I follow that.
Should we start a wiki page if this be an involved decision? Perhaps
this change is too trivial?
We should at least file a Jira ticket for it.
