If I understand it correctly, that sounds like a pretty good compromise.
Is it really worth going for a ThreadLocal to avoid API changes? I mean, there
may be good reasons for using a ThreadLocal (e.g. different behavior for the
ID-FS mapping when a CAS is concurrently accessed from different threads) - but
my feeling using a ThreadLocal to avoid API changes maybe is a bit too
conservative. APIs should be able to evolve.
