any pointers to docs on setting up different "identities" ( id-names and emails
) on one GitHub account?

(as you can see, I'm missing some "basics" ... :-) and google doesn't seem to be
my friend)

Perhaps the problem is "English" - meaning of the word "account" and "identity".

Does this article

titled "How to Work with GitHub and Multiple Accounts", really mean
       "How to Work with GitHub with one account and multiple identities" ?

If so, does that article more-or-less describe what you're doing?
