Sorry for the late reply. It is my understanding that VCL just doesn't support having a 2nd virtual drive. When we need more space in an image, we just expand the disk file to make it larger [1]. That page is somewhat out of date but gives a good idea of the steps. I've found I need to unregister the VM from ESXi before editing the .vmx file and the register it again after the edit. The Gparted part is no longer needed. For Windows images, the filesystem can just be extended using the built in disk management utility. For Linux images, you'll need to boot the VM, use a partition editor to extend the partition, reboot, then use a utility to extend the filesystem. A similar process can be done for KVM based VMs. You'll just need to use the qemu-img utility to resize the disk file instead of vmkfstools.
