Seems this had a side effect:
The following:
{code}
#macro (myMacro $myvar)
$myvar
#end
#set ($myvar = "value")
#myMacro()
{code}
produces:
* Before VELOCITY-926 and in 1.7: "value"
* After VELOCITY-926: $foobar
