Hi Maarten,
I like your idea with the news ticker.

You previous proposal was clean and straight forward.
First of all the footer, the list of open source project might cause
the wrong impression that these applications are mandatory to use OO.o.
Agree.
I am also dislike the list of OO.o component icons, they are in my
opinion not necessary.
I have to disagree here. The problem with the OOo main page (for the
longest time) was that there was no way to find out what you get when
you
download OOo. I'm still not pleased with the way the components have
been
shoved to the side on the current page, but they are an absolute
necessity.
Get rid of the icons, they don't add anything. An office suite is an
office suite. We can use the icons when we want to discuss the
different programs OOo is composed of, but it is not necessary to have
icons for the sake being there on the main page. Rather have them on
something like a 'product tour' (something imho the mainpage doesn't
have to be (though it could link to such a thing directly)
Remember, not everyone coming to the main page is coming in to
join the community -- I'd be willing to bet that most people are
coming to
find out "what is OpenOffice.org, what does it consist of, and what
can it
do for *me*?"
You don't solve the problem by showing the abstract icons imho.
You have also removed news section, which is important for me.
The news is important, in that it lets people know that OOo is
actively being talked about/used.
You have news and a changing home page. Imho news does not have to
take much of the main page's space. Bit of changing content is good,
but the main task is to have a stable entry to the website. What do
you think about instead just a news ticker?
g.,
Maarten
