I hadn't looked yet in the source, but was about to. Then realized I'd
sent off the letter below too soon: looking into another list (not
website) showed it worked as usual, making me think that maybe, gee,
maybe that message had no thread associated with it; or that website
is exceptional. I'll look deeper.

messages. I do this by looking at the thread of the offending
message.
Under the new design, I cannot easily do that. If before, after
clicking on the message's URL, I could select, "View thread," now,
that option has disappeared, and I must go to the archives and find
the message that way.
I suspect the feature I miss has just been inadvertently
suppressed....
