Hello all, It has been some 3 months since we launched the new website design. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and the new design has officially brought some positive changes, with the rate of downloads from the homepage doubling from 10% to 20% [1].
With OOo 3's upcoming release, it might be a good time to re-evaluate the design and see if we can improve anything - a number of suggestions have been collected from the webmaster list [2]. Many of the ideas there have not been addressed, and there are some interesting and potentially useful suggestions there. The most notable website project that needs to get done for OOo 3 (IMO) is the new why.openoffice.org design [3]. The most important task there is fixing up the CSS, which has been broken somewhat by the new design's CSS. I now have time for this task, and am prepared to work on it in the coming weeks. André, you haven't completely disappeared, have you? :) The graphics there may also need updating (screenshots - to reflect the Galaxy interface, and possibly branding once the art project decides on a splash screen design for OOo 3). As for the homepage, here are some possible changes, in response to [2]. You can get an idea of what some of these might look like with a mockup I have made [4]. - Replacing the current icons on the homepage with similar or equivalent Galaxy icons - Evaluating accessibility concerns, including the tabs interface (Search, Change Language, New User) - Minor design tweaks that help usability (e.g. having key words in each action statement as italics, making the currently selected tab more clear, etc) Please let me know what you think.
