(http://recaptcha.net/learnmore.html)... on the other hand it does
pose some accessibility issues - for example, I tried the audio
version and couldn't make out a single word because the quality was
horrible.

You're not the only one :-) I listened to the audio too, and was rather... stumped by it. Parts were clear enough, but other parts were almost impossible to hear clearly.

> An email alternative should be provided if this is used
(taking care to avoid the spambots from getting that email address!)

Will that ever be possible? On the forum side, it's not taken long for spambots to snag the internal forum admin email... and we get regular spam to that email account. It only takes one Wiki user running Windows with a virus and the email address will be harvested.

the question is whether the inconvenience this will pose to users is
worth the time saved for the admins who would spend less time having
to deal with all that spam.

That is a good question. Currently the admin tasks are spread amongst quite a few people (volunteers) who have SysOp rights - they can delete pages, block spammers etc. This is not automated.

I have added a regex to weed out the easy stuff (word matching), which has reduced the spam somewhat

Not too long ago, the OOo wiki main page temporarily became an online
black market pharmacy - it was fixed reasonably quickly but it does
suggest that the wiki's spam management strategies could be tightened
up. So, I'd say yes - this is a minor inconvenience considering it
will be one-off for the user, and it will potentially save the admins
lots of time in the future (when OOo becomes even more popular :))

Yup, the OOo pharmacy was up and available to the world for about 40 minutes or so before it was discovered and removed.

In the current setup, it's quite easy to script things for a bot to register a user account, receive the activation email, follow the activation link, and then post this kind of Spam. That said, it's intermittent... and the regex does limit the possibility to save spam pages.. as long as they use one of the words I've put into the regex.

You can test the regex spam filter by editing a Wiki page (like your own user page for example) and add a word such as the common name for a pill we all get spammed for (can't state it here or the email will be blocked by the spam filters). When you attempt to save, you will get a notice that the save has been blocked by the Spam Filter.
