IMHO we should have entry points or pages where building OOo is described for each platform. Even if this will create some redundancy, "factoring out" all common stuff might be a good idea for source code (that is interpreted by a machine) but not for documents read by humans. A lot of people that were lost in the old documentation told me that the comprehensive version for Windows finally showed them the ropes - and a main reason was that they didn't have to read everything, pick up what is necessary for Window and then search for additional things only found on Windows. As getting the source code can be considered a task in itself and indeed is platform independent once you have installed the necessary tools, I would opt for - one page for each platform describing how to set up the build environment and everything you need to build OOo; each page links to some pages: - one page that describes how to get (and possible manage) the source - one page that describes how to build and work with the source - one page that describes how to work with the SCM That's only a rough idea and I know that my own page for Windows does contain everything in one place, but only because we don't have pages for Linux, Mac and Solaris that also could link to those parts I could have moved elsewhere. IMHO all other documentation for the build environment should just be removed, especially the documentation outside of the wiki. What do you think?
