Hmmm... which is... weird since editing the Wiki page MediaWiki:Common.css should add in the missing code. I edited $WIKIROOT/skins/common/shared.css and added the missing CSS definitions for the tables etc, and things are looking considerably better. I will document that this was necessary in the Wiki maintenance page.
