I am starting to draft a message to a mail list, and I want to reference
different threads with different subjects which appeared months apart.
It occurs to me that the current task would be easier if the messages in
my mailbox had a link to the message in the list archive, perhaps just
before the line "To unsubscribe ..." which the list software appends to
each message.

However, this could discourage people from deciding more particularly
what they are responding too and quoting just that.  That would transfer
work from the writer to the reader.  And that is a bad thing.

Do you see any benefit here, on balance?
