Chris Lambertus commented on WHIMSY-402:
----------------------------------------
I agree with Dave in that this field should not be removed. I believe it is
important for ASF committers to be able to share their various identities as
viewable in the Whimsy Roster. While the github field in LDAP is not currently
used for technical mapping of ASF account and Github account, it remains a
valuable tool for committers to visually match ASF IDs with Github IDs. LDAP is
a perfect location for this type of data.
I do believe it is important to disambiguate the fact that the LDAP field is
not _*currently*_ used by Boxer, but I also feel a case could be made to have
Boxer automatically populate this field. I'll describe a proposal for such and
bring it to an Infra list for further discussion.

> The GitHub username is no longer used by Infrastructure processes. The
> linkage between LDAP accounts and GitHub usernames is contained within the
> gitbox service. LDAP is not used as a storage mechanism for that linkage.
> As a result, I believe the field is obsolete and (worse) potentially
> confusing with the account *actually* linked to an LDAP account. I think it
> should be removed from the UI. (and eventually from LDAP, but that's
> orthogonal)
