Yes, that was from me trying out the Maven versions plugin to change the version number to a non-SNAPSHOT one. The instructions at https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/WHIRR/How+To+Release actually use a for loop and sed, which I haven't changed since not all the nested POMs were changed when I used the versions plugin. Anyway, as Patrick said these extra files should not be harmful.
