Was it ever HTTPS enabled ?! 6x and 8x also have the same problem. OpenShift says: Your account does not allow custom SSL certificates. Upgrade your plan → <https://openshift.redhat.com/app/account/plan> We use the basic/free account.
I don't remember ever using HTTPS for the examples. I think it is like this since day 1.
