You could also check out the WSO2 Governance Registry, specifically its REST API feature. The advantage of GREG is, it is built to support multiple media types, and it functions better as a repository than DSS. But if we are talking about large files (~10MB) and a huge number of files (tens of thousands) it may not be the best option, because it is not meant to be a scalable storage.
AFAIK, DSS suffers from the limitation of not being able to handle binary files very well. It base64 encodes it when sending it out. So in the client side you need to decode it.
