Cassandra 1.* does not need java 1.7. @Vishanth, Regarding the original issue: As some pointed out, this can be a permission issue. Try unzipping Cassandra into a different location (home, may be) and check. Or try running as root in your current installation. (Just to check if it's a permission issue.)
