Hi David,
I think your corrections were right. It should work in that setting. Maybe you 
should check that OO writer has write permissions in the specified directory, a 
second check should make sure you use version 1.9.104 and not version m100 or 
before. The last idea I have is, that the data inside the instance must conform 
to the schema. If you try to save a string inside a field that only allows 
numbers you won't get an error message, but submission is canceled.

P.S. I you might have figured out I'm running Windows and therefore cannot 
asure you that it works on Linux at all, but it should.

I have tried variations like file:///home/dnw/xml/instance.xml 

But if can not get it write (also no error messages).
