I can only speak for what, _I would like_. :)

Software should receive a lot more recognition within scientific
communities. And as citations are a standard way to express content and
usage of other works I do believe that DOI's would be helpful.

For the majority of communities the exact version of the used software is
irrelevant while other communities _may_ find individual citations useful.

I would certainly welcome a generic DOI for any application/library.

Anyhow, one DOI to mark the entire application is by far the most important
thing.
Possibly stepping this when supporting major standards, for instance MPI-1,
MPI-2, MPI-3?
And, finally if you like individual release DOI could also be helpful.
