That is most likely the reason since usually https, SSL is usually the
way to get passed our dumb proxy.

You should still be able to do so; I think you're running into the
issue that proxies don't work in b5. Check out the current nightly at
http://nightly.adium.im, it has a fix for proxies + the new yahoo
login.
