My understanding is that at the UEFI Developers Conference last year,
there was a confirmation/agreement that the C BaseTools should be
rewritten in Python. I was wondering what the status of that work is:
whether there's been any progress or if nothing has been started whether
there are plans to?
I'm interested in modernizing the C tools, because quite a lot of the
code is *very* old and crusty. But I don't want to put work into that if
in a couple of years it's all going to be thrown away with the rewrite.
Personally, as someone who in the mid-2000s heard of a colleague giving
the company a C tool only to have another team spend 6 months rewriting
it in Python and wasting time, I'm not convinced of the value of any
work rewriting them especially since a previous project to do that has
already not worked out. Instead, we could fairly easily have CI build
the BaseTools and have people download precompiled binaries if we want
to avoid people having to build them themselves.
