At least I can state some numbers Aarno passed us from load-testing:

max. SMS using test_cimd2 350 msg/sec. unsing HTTPS interface, 1300
msg/sec. *without* HTTPS interface.

I did some testing here on "normal" hardware and the numbers were 100
req/sec. and higher. Basicly it's difficult to generate the load here.

Not directly, we use a clustered version that spreads the load to the
single boxes.

Hope that helps.

BTW, Kannel is programmed using POSIX threads, so it's blaising speed.
Think of MySQL as a very fast SQL Server. Kannel may be compared to
that, IMO.
