Hi list,

we are having a problem with our nokia 7110 phones using kannel's at2
smsc module. it's not clear to me if our problem is with the phone, the
sim card or with kannel, so i thought i might see if anyone on the list
has any ideas.

our setup:
3 7110s connected via data cables (RS 232) to the serial ports of a
linux box. we use kannel and the at2 smsc module connected to the
phones to send/receive SMS periodically throughout the day, somewhere
around 30 msg/day/phone. each phone is connected to a different mobile
operator (3 different sim cards) (operators: "A","B","C"). this setup is
basically an automatic SMS service testing application.

the problem:
after a variable amount of time (2 days to 10 days), the phone connected
to one particular operator ("A") refuses to receive messages. it is
perfectly able to send, but nothing is received (no indication in the
kannel logs that anything has reached the phone). we turn off the tests
for the first phone and let the other 2 continue to run. after another
variable amount of time (several days), the phone connected to the
second operator ("B") refuses to receive messages. at this point i
become very frustrated. :-) i turn off the phones (removing the
batteries), wait a few minutes, turn on the phones and restart the
application. things work fine again for another variable amount of time
(several days) before the entire process starts again.

The problem is your 7110. The reason is that those phones where never made for heavy duty use and its easy to confuse the phone. Its enough to send and receive in the same second or send too fast or such. This is a general problem of using AT driver on Nokia phones. If you use heavy duty GSM modems you wont have this effect.
