ok, Kannel assumes that it threads its internal message format in latin1. This is in some sence a convention. Unfortunatly it may be desirable, like in your actual case, to preserve the charset (in sense of the available characters that can be represented by the set). I'd be +0 in having this "configurable" by config file. Which means avoiding the automated convertion to latin1 internally.
