How strange, just deletes configure and checked out a fresh file, and it works fine.

nop, can't reproduce.
Obviously you did an "update" on your local cvs tree, and some changes lead to a conflicht while merging. Any manual changes you did in configure?
You should delete your local copy of configure and checkout a fresh file from cvs for it and retry.
