ok, James, fixed this now... cvs is operable again....
unfortunatly we don't know how the character corruption did take place, since the file change timestamp is from Feb 12, there hasn't been any "manual" change. I'm afraid it "could" be a hard drive write/read failure, since this 1 unit beast we run on is running for some time now. I'll make a tarball from the cvs repository, just in case the hard disk crashes.
