For what it's worth... this behaviour occurs on an SMSC operated by a
large entity that sounds like Saferway <wink> and also has another
name with *365 in it. ;-P

We basically wrap a cron script around the cgi/status of smsbox. And
then ?stop and ?start the smsc=your_smsc when the connection is
detected as dead.
