The OLPC display is *both* backlit (i.e. transmissive) *and* reflective (i.e. sunlight) you can switch between the two modes with a key on the keyboard. You might be able to see it in moonlight (might try that tonight... kindof doubt the usability) but I'd certainly recommend using the backlight in that situation.
