I tend to do things weird.  I have the Maximum RPM book, and I read the
guide to making RPM's on the linux-mandrake.com website.  Other than that, I
would install the source for the package that I wanted to modify, look at
what's in the SOURCES directory, then look at the spec file in SPECS.  I
would use Maximum RPM to look up things I didn't understand, and then I
would just start trying things ;D
