Both my parents run Fedora on their laptops, none of which support AVX2. My own desktop machine at home is on the borderline (Haswell). I consider this proposal a complete no-go. That said, I think it might be interesting to have a way for newer CPUs to make use of the new instructions, and people proposed ways to achieve that. But first, we should gather some performance numbers, whether it's worth it at all.
