Well, I was around in the old split days and I remember all the headaches 
around the lines of "package X cannot be built against library Y because X 
is in Core whereas Y is in Extras" and all the ugly workarounds we had for 
such issues. Having one unified repository helped a lot to resolve those 
very technical issues.
