Can't you use src-git with Fedora packages? Sometimes downstream patches are necessary, I do not see that as a problem, and if it is in the fedora repos at least it is clear this is a Fedora specific down-patching and not an upstream fork. In any case I have nothing against you forking upstream, I just figured I'd mention the obvious path most other fedora packages take.
