Public discussion background see this thread:

http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2010-October/msg00226.html

Specifically:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2010-October/msg00263.html
and the reply from the LightDM developer:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2010-October/msg00269.html

I really don't see how a LightDM based greeter is going to be
significantly better one it reaches feature parity.

The only advertised benefit of LightDM is theming flexibility compared
to gdm from gnome 2/gtk2. But for a gnome 3/gtk3 based gdm with CSS
theming support I'm not even sure that's true any more.
